To establish whether an organization has design parameter fit, the organization's structural configuration (simple, functional etc.) is compared with its properties (complexity, formalization etc.). 

For instance, there is a misfit in design parameters if an ad hoc organizational configuration has the property of centralization. The employees in an ad hoc configuration are most likely experts, i.e., qualified decision makers within their own domain. Thus, in such an organization, it would be difficult for a manager to follow the tasks of his entire staff; it is not needed and therefore inefficient. Design parameter fit would therefore require less decentralization.
