Defining the objectives of the project

In preparation for an OrgCon analysis, it is important to understand what results and output are desired for completion. In preparation for such a project time needs to be spent on defining the goal and objectives of the exercise as well as keeping notes of assumptions that will apply to your analysis.

Answering the following questions may be useful:

  • What is the goal of the exercise? What is the end point?
  • What are the objectives?
  • What intermediate steps need to be reached to achieve the end point?

Possible objectives include:

  • Know ourselves / others
  • Self understanding of strengths and weaknesses
  • Better group dynamics
  • Communication of strategies to the organization
  • New organization design
  • Background to merger
  • Public image

Other relevant question to ask yourself may be:

  • What output(s) is/are expected of this exercise?
  • What product(s) do I want to offer?
  • For what audience?
  • How will the OrgCon recommendations be used?
  • How will other products resulting from the exercise be used?
  • What inputs will be needed, are they available?
  • What is the cost of obtaining the inputs?

It is also important that the user define what will constitute project success and who will evaluate it (evaluation indicators).
